PRACTICAL NUTRITION SUPPORT FOR CANCER SURVIVORSHIP

About Shayna Komar, RD

Hi, I'm Shayna Komar, a Registered and Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist in Atlanta, Georgia with over 25 years of experience specializing in oncology nutrition. I earned my degree in Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise from Virginia Tech and completed my dietetic internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. I helped create the nutrition program at the Thomas F. Chapman Cancer Wellness Center at Piedmont Hospital in 2006, where I continue to provide nutrition counseling, cooking classes, and group workshops for cancer patients and caregivers.

In addition to oncology, I work with clients seeking overall wellness and lifestyle nutrition support. I collaborate with Exercise Wellness Solutions and provide corporate wellness workshops and individual nutrition counseling sessions.

I’m known for my approachable, down-to-earth style and for translating evidence-based nutrition into practical, realistic strategies that support the immune system, reduce inflammation, and promote long-term wellness.

"My goal is to empower you to feel confident, supported, and nourished as you work toward thriving before, during, and after treatment."

Shayna Komar Nutrition Dietitian Personalized Diet Planning Cancer Fighting Foods Atlanta

I pursued a degree in nutrition, foods, and exercise at Virginia Tech because I have always been an athlete and physically fit. In high school I realized that what I put into my body made a difference on how I performed on the field or in the gym. I saw the direct connection between nutrition and exercise. I wanted to learn more about "nutrition as the fuel" and "exercise as the engine" and how these two powered together.

My focus in the nutrition space is cancer prevention and working with cancer patients before, during, or after treatment. I enjoy building a survivorship nutrition program and giving someone the tools to thrive and prevent recurrence. I also enjoy working with clients that want to build healthy eating habits for themselves and their families that will last through generations. I enjoy helping clients that are ready to eat to support their immune system, boost mental and emotional well being.  I am so encouraged when a client says he/she is now cooking a different meal or recipe for the whole family that is a bit healthier for them. I believe that helps break cycles of poor eating and can change generations! Shared nourishing meals give people time to connect, talk, and bond.

Outside of working as a dietitian, I enjoy teaching group fitness classes. I have been teaching weekly for 25 years. I am AFAA certified for group fitness. I enjoy cooking, gardening, hiking, biking, and traveling with my own "sports team" of three sons and a husband. My philosophy when working with individual clients is to "meet them where they are nutritionally" and then empower them to make positive changes in their food choices.  I love translating evidence based nutrition into consumer friendly messages that are practical and accessible for everyday life. I am committed to helping clients strengthen their immune system to promote long term cancer free optimal wellness.
